For anyone who's forgotten the magic of simple pleasures or distant summers, this is the perfect book to bring him or her to that place once more. Deephaven would do well on a h.s. summer reading list, not just to propel the characters into the future, but to coax the student to re-examine his or her own ambitions, and to reflect on where the years, so quick to pass, might lead. This is a sweet book and, at times, a sad book, one that is profoundly regional and historically accurate. The reader will be reminded that a community is made up of unique individuals, and that even a passing act of kindness can be life altering. This book begs to be read, re-read, and thoroughly enjoyed.
